Johansson Norgren ready to win all eleven races
For the second year in a row, Britta Johansson Norgren from Lager 157 Ski Team became the Visma Ski Classics Champion. In this week’s Friday article, the Swede talks about herringboning training, using kickwax again and setting goals.

In the season of 2016, Britta Johansson Norgren won Jizerská, La Diagonela, Marcialonga and Toblach-Cortina, and she became the Visma Ski Classics Champion. In the season of 2017, Britta won La Sgambeda, Vasaloppet and Årefjällsloppet, and took the same title. She also won the green sprint bib and the Visma Nordic Trophy.
– It was for sure another awesome season. My goals related to results were to win the yellow bib, to finally triumph in Vasaloppet and to reach the podium in Birkebeinerrennet. I reached all those three goals.
After being the first loser the previous three years, Britta was maybe more relieved than happy after winning Vasaloppet, the most prestigious event in Visma Ski Classics.
– There is a bit of true in that. Now I look forward to win Vasaloppet again, but without the enormous pressure from others and myself.
Practiced herringboning
When Britta talks about goals, it is obvious that her driving force is connected to improvements, rather the victories.
– Of course it is always great to win. But my motivation stems from developing details in training. From August all the way through the season I practiced herringboning every week. A lot. Both in dry land training with poles and on snow, mostly by sprint repeats. It is difficult to herringbone without kickwax, since you are not aloud to glide. That training probably helped me to win Årefjällsloppet, where you have to herringbone in the sprint to finish. That was very satisfactory for me.

Victories in eleven races?
Britta is also triggered by tough challenges, like winning Birkebeinerrennet without kickwax, as the first girl.
– I also have a crazy thought about winning all eleven races in Visma Ski Classics. I mean, why not? Katerina Smutna won five races in a row this season. So eleven should be possible. And yes, of course it was hard mentally to lose in so many sprints to Smutna last season. It is due to different reason, but I am hungry and I look forward to get my revenges.
Maybe kickwax next season
Britta double poled all races last season and she reached the podium every time except once, in the very hilly Reistadløpet, where she was 6th.
– I don’t think I could have reached the podium anyway, but I might have performed better with kickwax. Next season, in contrary to this, I will be prepared mentally and equipment-wise to put on kickwax in some races. It depends on the snow conditions. If the temperature is stable, it is more favourably with kickwax in a race like Reistadsløpet.

Victorious on Iceland
After the Visma Ski Classics final in Levi in April, Britta took a two week-break from training (she calls one hour of running each day as a break). After that she started up the training for next season by winning Fossavatn Ski Marathon on Iceland.
– It was a great trip. I usually don’t race much in the spring. Now I both had two late Visma Ski Classics events and the race on Island. It was by far my longest season ever.
– After I got home I started up with dry land training. The true kick-off with my training was the first camp with the team in May. It was kind of a chock for the body. The team looks great and we develop every year.
Coach Emilia
This interview is done right after Britta has finished a long distance rollerski workout with Ida Ingemarsdotter on the Swedish national team. Otherwise Britta is often training by herself.
– Anton Karlsson just joined our team and we live in the same city, so we will probably be doing some training together this year.
Britta also has another training partner, her five-year-old daughter Emilia.
– She can bike with me when I am doing short, easy runs. She is my toughest coach, since she always says I should run faster.
